pooh bear raises an interesting question

“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best,” and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.
~A.A. Milne

Gardening consists of mind activity – planning, obsessing, dreaming, thinking, observing, as well as actually weeding, doing stuff with compost, moving plants, planting plants, buying plants and pruning plants. Then there’s blogging about it ...

I think Pooh raises an interesting question. Is garden thinking even better than doing it? I don’t know the answer, it’s all so wonderful.

For example, as I type these words I am listening to the little chirps from the tiny bush birds that visit occasionally. I am so happy and relieved when I hear them because that means they have defied the possessiveness of the mynah birds, who sometimes seem to think they are boss of the garden. And for once the bird sounds are louder than the noise of traffic.

  2. I love Pooh and inderstand what he meant. I love the expectation not less than gardening itself. I don't do much of the garden planning, very often it's just spontanious, sudden decisions. Because of that, there are mistakes, too... Very nice post!

  3. I think its both, I love the planning and trying to realise that dream, and then trying again the next year, and the next ...

  4. Hi Catmint~~ Oh the anticipation. Yes I think anticipation is better just because it's always perfect. Reality can be wonderful but there is always some little nagging imperfection to cloud it. Working in the garden always revitalizes me but I lately I keep reminding myself to stop and just enjoy the beauty. It's like at times the flowers, the sunshine, the breeze the birdsong are all too much to take in. Very nice post!

  5. Actually I prefer the being and doing, and like the reflecting afterwards more than anticipation before. But then I'm not a great one for planning - even when I do the details get filled in during rather than after the process.

  6. Stephanie, thanks for visit and comment.

Tatyana, me too - sometimes i plan but often it's spontaneous and whichever it is I find hings rarely turn out the way you plan.

Hermes, yes - it's a metaphor for life isn't it? The journey, not the destination (bit of a cliche, but i still like the idea)

Grace, thanks for the visit and comment. Good reminder: just stop and enjoy the beauty.

SG, if it's an evolving activity, maybe there aren't really stages like planning, doing, evaluating. Or maybe it is different for every gardener. Thanks for the visit and comment.

  8. I like the doing bit of everything because I'm not very good at planning.

I also like the surprises which are part of the doing but don't figure in the planning.

  10. Hi Catmint
I think Pooh is talking about Anticipation, that moment just before you taste it. Pooh is very wise. I am going to write an article on Roof Top Honey People in Melbourne, thank you you have given me an idea to start the article with a honey/bee quote from Pooh if I can find one, Pooh being an expert on honey and probably bees.
    Cheers Sandi
