weird crow behaviour

I was puzzled to see my small, normally reasonably sane dog Potter unsuccessfully trying to climb into the bird bath. Investigating, to my surprise I found a large slice of soggy bread in the water. I changed the water and removed the bread.

The next day I noticed a large crow with a slice of white bread in its beak sitting on a branch above the bird bath. This time I witnessed it dropping the bread into the water!

I have many questions about this. As a child I used to feed seagulls and pigeons with bread. Is this a role reversal? And where does the crow obtain and keep its stash of white sliced bread? What does it mean? Has anyone else out there in the blogosphere experienced this phenomenon?

  1. Hmm, that's funny! Now let me think: could it perhaps be coming from a neighbor who feeds the birds bread?! If so, that crow is being a big piggy, since he takes the whole piece for himself and then throws it away, without sharing with all the other little birdies:) Jan

  2. My neighbour just told me about a pet crow she used to have. It would follow behind her in the row when she was transplanting onions, squawk and ull up the little seedlings with a gentle tug...but not right up out of the ground. Hazel swears these onions grew much better!
Perhaps the crow may be of some guidance to you and your garden...a orchid muse say...
